Steve,

Check (change) the bios of the system, 
hard disk settings in BIOS should read the same as fdisk :
> Disk  /dev/hda:   255 heads, 63 sectors, 789 cylinders
It is probably set to different cyls, heads, and sectors.
I had something like that before on an desktop system.
changing the values, fixed the boot
