Assuming you are running apache on a reasonably standard Linux system, you
have to tell apache where to find the directories, then set them up so they
have the right permissions. Since all you say is "it didn't work", I don't
know where your setup failed, and this evening I'm just too tired to go
through all the possibilities for you. Repost with a better description of
(a) your system, (b) what you tried, and (c) what the failure looked like,
and I'll try to help.
