Probably you would find ppp dislup better than shell connections. The PPP
HowTo is quite thorough, if a bit intimidating for a rank beginner. You
might look to see if your Linus distribution has a default pppd setup that
you can easily personalize (add your ISp's phone number, your userid and
password, etc.) ... the distributions I use (Slackware and Debian) are quite
good about offering easy-to-adapt models, and probably the others do this as
well.
