Ok. From what you write, I still can't figure out where in the process the ppp connection is failing. So here are some steps you can take to try to sort things out. 1. Check your logs and see what pppd is logging about an attempt. The info is probably in /var/log/messages, but RH may use a different file name (check your syslogd.conf file to see). 2. Before you have pppd running, take a look at the output of "ifconfig" and "route -n". This will tell you what the normal state of your host is. 3. When you have a pppd dialin session running, take a look at the output of those same two commands. See if there is a properly configured ppp0 interface and a route through it back to the host that is dialing in. 4. What is the actual line you use to run pppd? That is, what is the entry in /etc/inittab? (Or are you starting with an ordinary shell connection and doing it by hand? Is that what you mean when you ask "is there a way of automating the login - ie - without having to type in pppd -detach"? If so, the answer is yes -- mgetty can run pppd directly. If there isn't a model for this in the PPP HowTo, let me know and I'll dig up a sample setp of scripts from somewhere.) 5. What options are you giving to pppd? These can be on the command line, in /etc/ppp/options, in a file with a name something like /etc/ppp/options.S0, or possibly in other places, depending on how you set things up. 6. After you "remove the eth0 ethernet card from the basic host information", I gather that the pppd connection runs properly. After you make this change (do you mean you just do "ifconfig eth0 down" or do you mean something else?), look at the output of "ifconfig" and "route -n" again and see what has changed. I suspect that by looking at the logs and the command output, you will be able to find the problem. If not, post again, with specific answers to the questions -- quote the actual output, don't rry to interpret it -- and answer the following two questions as well: 1. You say "I am able to conect to the box". What does "connect" mean? 2. You say "cannot ping the IP address ar do much of anything". What response do you get from ping (no response at all? "network unreachable"? something else?) when you try? Are you pinging the IP address of the ppp0 interface or the eth0 interface? What else have you tried besides ping (that is, what does the "much of anything" refer to)?
