About a week ago, you helped me correct a problem I had with logging in - the
lack of it. I ran the rm -f /etc/nologin to cure the shutdown scripts, as
suggested. If you remember, I couldn't log in as any user - other than root.

This solved the problem at work on the Corporate Intranet and while logging
in at the home Linux server. However, (on the home network) I am still unable
to log into the Linux box from the Win98 station (smb) as any user.

I can see the existance of the Linux RedHat 5.1 computer in Win98
NetNeighborhood - and 'ping' is always successful - but when I double-click
the icon I can hear both sets rumbling and get, "You must supply a password
for this resource - //Linux/IPC$.

Conversely, when I try to connect in the other direction with smbclient
\\Win98 or \\Win98\ the screen scrolls one blank line and gives me a ">" and
just hangs - as if its waiting for more input. When I type a command (Dir or
ls) at the > prompt I get a syntax message ending with the error:
Not enough '\' characters in service

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
