.au is a more native sound format for linux, as you can do

# cat file.au > /dev/audio

and it works AFAIK. There surely are many programs out there that can
convert between the two, search freshmeat.

Put your card into a windows box and compare, play the wavs on a box
that has an sb live or similar installed and compare. That should give
you hints.

It's 128_k_bit and that's the bitrate of the MP3 stream, i.e. 128*1024
bits/sec = 16k/sec.
The other one is the sample frequency, i.e. how often the signal was
sampled per unit time.
