The general places to look for documentation are

        1. In /usr/doc on your Linux host. Exactly where within there to
look varies a lot by distribution and version (on my Debian host, for
example, you then go into xfree-common and xserver-common), so look around.

        2. The canonical source for X on Linux is www.xfree86.org --
extensive documentation there.

        3. There are also man pages for a lot of things -- including (again,
on my systems) xdm and xauth (note the lower case - in Linux and Unix, case
counts, so, for example, XAUTH != xauth).

Whether you will find these sources to provide good *beginner* documents is
hard to say, but they will be the places that have the information you need.

All I can offer is this general feedback since, as Richard has already
noted, there is no way for us to give focused advice about "some error about
XAUTH or XDM".

Good luck. Write again with specifics if you want more pointed advice.
