I will attmt to answer this one, other may be able to correct me if i'm
wrong.
"soname" is a name within the library itself. When ldconfig is run it
checks all thoses names against the to be linked lib, or so the info page
says.

When did it start ?
Have you changed anything ie, added new librarys,
changed ld.so.conf.
Installed new library packages.?
