Without checking the details of your monitor, I'd assume its command-line
mode looks big enough to you because the vt's default to 80 *24 characters
on the screen ... which should look enormous on a 21" monitor. Actually, if
you're running a 21" monitor in 1280 * 1024 resolution, I'd kind of
surprised you find teh fonts too small (my 17" monitor looks fine in 1024 *
768, for example, and 1280 * 1024 on a 21" monitor is about the same size type).

It sounds like you only have the one screen resolution defined ... unusual
in my experience, but I'm used to setting up X with xf86config, not the
fancy, but sometimes unpredictable, GUI methods. You might try going back to
your configuration tool and specifying a coarser resolution there, to see if
that works.

In all of this I am assuming that te monitor is configured correctly, so the
X desktop fills the entire screen at the resolution you've reported. If I'm
mistaken in this, you need to check one of the sites I told you about in my
prior message and get the right specs -- vsync and hsync, mainly -- for your
monitor, so you can correct its configuration.

If none of this helps, perhaps you could try writing again with a more
complete description of the problem. Please remember that we're not seing
what you are seeing, and we have only what you tell us to work with. Don't
leave things out, and try to use plain description, not metaphor, to
describe your problem. You might also mention the model number of your
monitor and which X server you are running.
