Best guess is that its an old a.out binary. How to run it, I'm not
entirely sure, but old libraries and kernel support are both needed.

Get lxdoom, a better doom port that does hires graphics, X, Svgalib,
OpenGL, GGI, etc.
www.doomworld.com has got links to the linux versions. These are more
recent than the old "official" doom port, from 1994 or thereabouts.
