I have never hread of that brand of linux so i dont know anything about it.
Whih kernel version do you now have,?
uname -r will tell you.
The chances are high that its 2.2.xx, i presume also that Conectiva comes
with suitable librarys, kernel headers and the suitable gcc compiler.

The best thing to do is get the source at a mirror site near to you, or
ftp.kernel.org check the mirror sites first. The latest stabel kernel
version is 2.2.13 and is called linux-2.2.13.tar.gz

Now since you say that the kernel source is not installed i take it there
is no directory called /usr/src/linux so i would do the following;
Place the tar file which you receive in /usr/src and do;

mkdir linux-2.2.13
ln -s linux-2.2.13 linux
tar xzf linux-2.2.13.tar.gz
cd /linux/Documentation
less Changes
read the passages over what is needed to compile a 2.2.13 kernel and check
all the programs you have against the list supplyed. It even tells you
howto do that.
Now if the system is suitable you can then proceed. If not get the nessasry
tools and system packages, the Changes file tells you where you can obtail
all the stuff needed.

cd ../
less README
This file explanes HOWTO configure make and install a new kernel read it
carefully and digest what it says.
make mrproper
make config
This configures the new to be made kernel. If you dont understand a
configuration option type a ? for an explanation.
make dep clean bzImage
make modules modules_install

Another file to read BEFORE making a kernel is normaly found in the
/usr/doc directory under HOWTO its called Kernel-HOWTO.
It might be in another directory on your distribution.
