Debian installs a full base system from 7 floppies plus rescue and drivers
floppies. You can then install packages individually from floppy 9if you are
insane) or use a PLIP (laplink) interface (cable costs USD10 at Circuit City)
and download them routing through your desktop.
Note- PLIP is cpu intensive networkoing and downloading this way may be slow.
Alternatively, you can install base and then configure a PLIP connection to
your desktop and use that cdrom to install. (a recent issue of Linux Gazette on
the web has an article about this- written in debianese).
I don't know much about Slackware- but I'm sure it will do the same. RedHat
might, and Caldera is out of it, as it can't even install from pcmcia cdrom.
