It was meant as a joke, as in X-Files on the telly.....
As to what resides in /var/lock/* all pid lock files, so you should have
xfs in there.
ls -al /var/lock/subsys/xfs
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Dec 12 14:23 xfs
Why not do;
ps ax | grep -v grep | grep xfs
That will show if xfs is running.

But surly just starting xfs should do the trick, at the very least if it
wont start do;
strace -o pipo xfs
the file pipo will hold some pointers albe the contents hard to interpret.

I dont know if thats such a good idea, but why not try, a beter idea is to
find the reason why it started, but that can cause problems.
