lp wont be there will it if there was no entry in /etc/modules.conf or
conf.modules. Futher if it were there then his printer might have even
worked without it, your are assuming that he is running kmod, if he were to
have had slackware and the default kernel, he would not have had kmod
running as its not included in the standard kernel.

When answering this type of question _never_ assume anything.
