Am I right that you haven't received any responses to your question yet? I
waited because I can only offer very limited help ... but perhaps it is
better than nothing.

What version of lpr are you running on "rocko", and what distribution and
version of Linux is it running on? My systems, which use LPRng, don't seem
to use the hosts.lpd file (or mention it in the documentation), instead
using lpd.perms to control access. So I'm wondering if whatever
documentation you are relying on is outdated.

Beyond that ...

How do you print successfully from Win98? Some sort of SMB setup on rocko?

Can you print to the printer from rocko itself? If not, what error do you
get (complete, please -- no "yada, yada")? And what does the lpr command
line look like?

When you try to print to the Deskjet from a different Linux host (one other
than rocko), what does the /etc/printcap entry on that host look like? How
do you try to print (that is, what's the exact lpr line you use)? What is
the *complete* error message it returns? How many different Linux hosts fail
to print, and how do their configurations vary?

If, on rocko, you run "telnet localhost 515", what response do you get?
(This is the port that lpd should be listening on to handle remoate
Unix-based print requests.)
