Ray, thanks for your response

I dont't know what version of lpd is running but it should be current, being
in the Mandrake 6.1 distro running on all of my machines.
The printer is shared via SMB and works fine for two Win98 machines on the
net. I can print from rocko itself. Its only the remote printing from
sluggo and gonzo that's not working. I just tried setting rocko's
/var/spool/lpd/lp to world writable with the sticky bit set per the Printing
howto. No change. As for the complete error message I will have to try to
remember, being unable to run printtool from my user login.

"Error printing test page to queue lp"
"Error reason: lpr: connect: connection refused. Jobs
queued but cannot start daemon." or something very similar.

When doing 'lpr /etc/printcap' I get a very similar, less wordy
message at the command line. I am baffled since I used printtool to set this
up and it should work. I get different results when trying to print a
test page from gonzo on the same network. Printtool says "Test page printed
to queue lp". Nothing comes out of the printer, though. Both sluggo and
gonzo have identical contents in printtools configuration window.
Rockos printcap is thus:
##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL cdj550 300x300 letter {} DeskJet550 3 1
lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:

Here is sluggo's printcap:
##PRINTTOOL3## REMOTE cdj550 300x300 letter {} DeskJet550 3 1
lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=rocko:\
        :rp=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:

Thanks for your willingness to help. Paul
