Interesting little piece this... Win 97 on a P486... Yikes, and I thought they were
only up to P3 ;-)

BTW; this link (http://www.compaq.com/support/files/portables/us/2_1.html) told me
that your computer has:
ESS 688/1688 Audio Driver Support
Cirrus Logic GD7543 Video Drivers
Check around on the Compaq site. It's not always easy to quickly find your way around
there, but usually the info you want is hidden somewhere inside of it...
I leave the distribution part to the more knowledgeable people on this list. I've only
tried Redhat, Mandrake and Slackware. On my P75 Laptop with 16 Meg Ram I'm using
Slackware 7.0 and I'm quite happy with that. Works fine with IceWM, a small Window
manager that doesn't eat up all of my limited Ram.
