First, a technical observation -- your problem is NOT with Linux. It is with
XFree86, the GUI system used with Linux. If you are able to see console
messages to the Blaster 3D, then Linux itself is working fine with the card.
As to your X problem ... the place to consult in these cases is
www.xfree86.org . In this case, a quick check of their database of supported
cards (at http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html) turns up these entries:
S3 Trio64 (generic) .................................... XF86_S3
Creative Labs Graphics Blaster 3D ...................... XF86_SVGA
In short, you need to switch from the S3 X server to the SVGA server. I
don't know the specifics of changing X servers on Mandrake, but generally it
will mean installing the server .rpm package (do I recall correctly that
Mandrake uses the rpm packaging system?), changing a symlink of
/some_directory_path/X to point to the new server, and perhaps changing some
XF86Config entries (using your X-setup program of choice).
BTW, you might also want to verify that Mandrake uses the latest version of
XFree86 (3.3.6 is just out, but I think 3.3.5 will be okay for you).
