Hi guys.
Sorry for posting too much but I was wondering.. and hopefully this
is not too out of topic. I am setting up my own network with
various recycled machines I have (when you have no money, even
a 386 can run as a secondary dns server).

I currently have set up the following: a 486 with 20 MB of RAM as
my gateway (to nothing), a 486 with 20 MB of ram as my primary
DNS, a 386 with 8 MB of RAM as my secondary (I know, I know),
a 486 with 12 MB of RAM as my DHCP server (in construction),
and another 486 with 12 MB of RAM as my mail server (running
FreeBSD and in the process of setup as well).

What I want to do is setup the DialD daemon (I avidly read the
HowTo as if it was honey), and I'm wondering... could a 56K
modem (external) work on the 486 running as a gateway?

No, before I get yelled, I did check the UART on the machine, and
it says 16550A. This is because the computer has both one CD-
ROM and two 250MB HD, since this card allows it first boot the
computer and then it boots by itself and assignes IRQs for the
various HDs. Anyway, looking at the UART one would assume
that I could run an external 56K modem.

I say external as from what I understand, internal modems suck
CPU power, and then there is this evil I haven't had a chance to
see yet, called Winmodems, which work only on Windows.

Comments?

Regards,
leandro
