Heck, we've probably got at *least* 3 or 4 of those adaptors floating around.
I've got one right here that was in my desk drawer - IIRC it came with my
Belkin trackball. If you want I'll send it to you so you can see what these
things are.

Aw hell, I knew I was forgetting something. I'm still trying to get used
to being *able* to answer some of the questions I see here. ;) It'll be a
while before I get as good at it as some others here (you, Lawson, Ray, Greg,
a few others). And yes, the MS protocol would be the first I would try based
on what he told us about his mouse.

Something like that. I'm not exactly sure how it all works, but basically
it *seems* to be simply that the PS/2 protocol is quite similar to the other
protocols that it usually - but not always - will "just work". I've only
recently just started digging into how that guts of the hardware works.
Maybe by the end of this semester I'll be able to answer that one better.

Many of the mice / trackballs I see in the stores are this way - the device
is a PS/2 but comes with these adaptors. At a guess, most typical users
just can't be bothered to know the difference. As long as there's something
in the box where "the thingy on the end of the cord of the whateveritis will
plug into the whatchamacallit on the back of the big box" they're happy. And
yes I *have* heard it described that way. ::shudder:: That was a scary
conversation.
