You dont say what distro you use, some distro's like corel have
changed the way KDE works, you can change the res, with the control
center, anyway the chanes are you wont have that.

The secret is in the XF86Config file normaly found in /etc or
/etc/X11.

You will need to add "valid" video settings for your monitor.
Under
Section "Monitor"

add modes, Eg; for a monitor that can do 1024x768@60Hz
# 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, 48.4 kHz hsync
Modeline "1024x768" 65 1024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

and under Section "Screen" for you Xserver, Eg, this example is SVGA.
    Driver "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device "Generic VGA"
    Device "SiS 6326"
    Monitor "Process"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        # Omit the Modes line for the "Generic VGA" device
        Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
        # Use Virtual 320 200 for Generic VGA
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600" "1280x1024"
        Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection

Now if that scares you, you can always copy XF86Config to say
XF86Config.org and run 'xf86cong' its a text based program and it
will ask you the details of your hardware, it will also include all
valid mode's for you, read ALL the text carefully, if you make a
mistake hit ctrl-c and simply start again.
