The program which tunes paramters the best is xf86config (note the
way its spelt), its a text based program but will do far more than
most other configurators for X.
Save your old XF86Config file before running xf86config.

Its not the chipset you set its the video server, you can however
tune the video server by means of options, those options can be found
in the HOWTOs and README's.
