The problem:
During Redhat 6.0 installation, the lilo installer reported an unspecified error, and
quit.
The OS installation finished only after I told it to Skip installing lilo.
The Redhat /boot partition is listed in the Boot Manager menu.
OS/2 Boot Manager gives an error "partition not formatted..." when trying to boot
Redhat.
The system will boot to Redhat from the Redhat boot floppy.
Redhat support passed the buck, naturally, since I mentioned OS/2:
"The resolution of your problem is:
Unfortunately, working with the OS/2 boot manager is not supported."
So much for their installation support.
The problem has nothing whatsoever to do with Boot Manager, it occurred during the
Redhat installation. I am trying to install lilo on sda8, aka /boot. This partition
resides at cyl 665-666, and reports itself as 15.7MB. I'm trying to set it up this way
because the main Linux partition, sda9, extends beyond cyl 1023.
I have set up several multi-boot systems, and I have never before had a problem with
the Redhat installation. I checked settings with linuxconf, and ran /sbin/lilo, no
change. I looked at /etc/lilo/config, it seems to be in order. I'm using OS/2 Boot
Manager up front because that is the recommended procedure for a system using both
Linux and OS/2, and I have experience with it. The partitions were created under OS/2,
and formatted with Linux fdisk, as specified in the RH Installation Guide.
What could have caused this?
Could someone please point me to or send me a file list for what *should* be on /boot?
Is lilo really necessary, or could I boot Redhat directly from Boot Manager?
TIA
