Sorry I missed this the first time through. (Apparently vger unsubscribed me
once again, and I just got back.) 

Bogdan's advice is right on target *if* you are connecting via a parallel
port, but you don't actually say that you are. My HP LaserJet 4M Plus is
directly on the Ethernet, and that requires a slightly different setup. In
effect, a networked printer runs its own emulation of lpd, and the host's
lpr needs to know how to talk to it.

My HP manual has a model printcap entry that served as a perfect model for
getting the printer configured -- as two logical printers, BTW, one for
ordinary text files, the other for Postscript. 

So check your printer manual and see if HP includes a section on using the
printer with Unix. If so, read and follow their advice.
