Ah, ok, windows is not choosy who its friends are, linux is.

When one is experiancing what they see as a lock-up or freeze-up of the
system, the num=lock is an indication the the kernel is still chuging away,
its normally user-space programs which fail and lock up, so if the num-lock
led works then basicly your machine is still working, it might not do what
you tell it to but its still alive.

BIOS Password protction is normally no problem, if the motherbaord has a
jumper by the battery just extract the jumper and let the cmos drain, it
can take 1 minute on one machine and day on another.
No battery user defined things dissapier including passwd's.
