Subject: Sound card configuration.

I never heard that, I don't think Linux puts any restrictions on it. Com2
does use IRQ 3, so if you have an devices on that (mouse or modem), the
sound card will conflict with it, this is the nature of PC hardware, not a
restiction by the Linux kernel.

OSS is Open Sound System; which oddly enough is a commerical closed program.
>And why must I use it?
You don't /have/ to use it. If your sound card is not supported directly by
the kernel drivers, OSS does provide more drivers for less common sound
cards, but if they say they don't have support yet for it and the kernel
doesn't have direct support for it, you might have to wait awhile. Check
the SuSE hardware database for your sound card.
> (b) How do I change the irq of the device?
Depends, on older cards you could change a jumper. On new ones it is either
handled by "special software" (which ussually never runs on Linux) or though
pnp. Check your hardware manual, if it doesn't tell you there goto the
manufactors web site and check their support page for directions on how
exactly to do this with that card. (Each card has a little diffreant way of
changing the settings.)
> (c) Can I configure sound on my system with this soundcard?
Check the SuSE hardware database at http://www.suse.com and also check the
OSS site, if both of these sources say it is unsupport, then it is probably
unsupported. If it is unsupported you could wait awhile to see if they pick
up on it or get a differant sound card at http://www.pricewatch.com or a
flea market for $5 or so.
