The answer here is in the man page, EXIT CODES are stated near the bottom
of the man page for fetchmail.
4 Some sort of fatal protocol error was detected.
I would consider your .fetchmailrc to be createing the error, (altho i do
not use fetcmail myself anymore) it could be something else.
I would try the following;
cd ~
cp .fetchmailrc rcfetchmail
edit .fetchmailrc
just have the following lines;
#!/bin/sh
defaults proto pop3
user "account_name_here"
poll donner.dartmouth.edu
pass "passwd_here"
save file
chmod 0710 .fetchmailrc
fecthmail -v -v donner.dartmouth.edu
Works for me.
