ipautofw, redir and updred were the first port forwarding tools
available. Later they were replaced by ipportfw for 2.0 kernels, and
ipmasqadm with ipportfw support for 2.2 kernels. So, in your case the
syntax is:

        ipmasqadm portfw -a -P udp -L $extip 5800 -R $intip 5800
        ipchains -I forward -j MASQ -p udp -s $intip 5800

ipmasqadm tool can be found at http://juanjox.kernelnotes.org (there are
sources and glibc2 binaries available in tar.gz and rpm format).
As for the documentation, maybe you've been reading the wrong howto :)
Take a look at
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO
It's all in there.

cheers
