PPPoE is supported on Linux. You can't ignore it; using it isn't too painful
(the biggest nuisance is being stuck with dynamic IP addressing, as I recall). 

The Debian package for it is called pppoe (as you might guess). No doubt
there's an .rpm with a similar name, if you're in that subset of Linux. 

As with many ISP-related things, getting it going on Linux is a bit harder
... not due to any intrinsic difficulty, but due to the widespread lack of
ISP support.
