What port do you want to connect the external modem to?

/dev/ttyS0 (= COM1)? Then you have a problem because the system uses both
COM1 and COM3, which share IRQ 4. If you don't actually use the internal
modem, you might be able to get away with this ... but I wouldn't count on
it ... especially if the COM3-modem is a WInmodem (see discussion below).

/dev/ttyS1 (= COM2)? Then there is really no alternative to your needing to
enable the second serial port in your BIOS. You don't say enough about your
hardware to let me be sure, but changing a BIOS setting of this sort isn't
anything that should cause anxiety.

/dev/ttyS2 (= COM3)? That is, use the internal modem? The mouse conflict is
definitely a problem, this way, and there is also the question of whether
the modem works at all with Linux. The "SupraExpress 56i Pro" appears to be
a Winmodem, hence will not work with Linux. But check this yourself at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/20000412a.html to be sure.

If none of the above ... well, then how *DO* you want to connect the modem?
I assume you don't have COM4 (/dev/ttyS3) hardware, so I skip that, and I
don't know of anyplace else to connect it to.

Beyond that ... it is possible that you are making an error at the Linux
level. Since you don't tell us *anything* about Linux here -- e.g., what
distribution and version; what you are running that generates the error
messages; what settings that unknown software has -- I can't help you at
that level, unless you post a more informative description of your problem.
