Standard Unix redirection works just fine. The problem you may be having is
that most gcc and g++ (not sure what CC is on your system, but probably it
too) output goes to standard error, not standard output. To redirect stderr
to a file, you do this:

gcc (usual stuff) 2>/tmp/gcc.errors

The "2" is a synonym for stderr (stdout is "1"), and naturally you can pick
any legal filename.
