OK I've got my Linux box tied to a remote server via PPP. I can surf the web
and all, but I want to do more. I can link into my Linux box at work thru the
gate way there, and now I want to run apps on my Linux Box at work (remote
machine called workmachinename) and have the Graphical stuff appear on my box
at home (local machine called homemachinename).
Sounds simple enough, but not so. I setup xhost on the local machine to accept
display from my remote machine. Then the problems start.
Once logged unto the remote machine I checked the env to see where the DISPLAY
variable is pointed and it was automagically set to the homemachinename. I
thought that was good, but I'm not sure now.
The server that I connect thru dynamically assigns the IP address to my local
machine (DHCP). However, it does not appear to link this dynamic address with
homemachinename. Why do I say that? Cause when I try to run an X app on the
remote machine I get the follwing error:
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't get address for homemachinename
Error: Can't open display: homemachinename:0.0
This leads me to believe that it cannot find homemachinename because it is not
in the host table. Since homemachinename is always assigned a different IP
address thru DHCP I can't really hard wire in the address in /etc/hosts
either.
Any ideas on how to work around this?
I'm running RH6.0
Thanks in advance.
