Well, thanks to those who emailed me. I ended up using the text below to
enable text passwords and it works wonderfully now. My next step is to get
my windows 98 box to print through samba, which i now see is harder then I
first thought.

John, have you considered setting up your Win system for plaintext
passwords. I know this is not real secure, but it is the way I
have my private network (2 slack boxen + 2 Win boxen).

Taken from /usr/doc/sambax.x/textdocs/Win95.txt:

To enable plaintext passwords in Win98

1. Click <start> then <run> and enter 'regedit' <- NO QUOTES!

2. Click on <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>

3. Find <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/VxD/VNETSUP>

4. From the menubar select <Edit New DWORD Value>

5. Rename the entry from <New Value #1> to 'EnablePlainTextPassword' <-
    AGAIN NO QUOTES!

6. Press <ENTER> then doubleclick on the new entry. A dialogue box will
pop up and the value needs to be set to '1' <- YEP! NO QUOTES!

7. Reboot the machine and VOILA!

Let me know how this works for you, k?
