I hope I am posting this to the correct mail list. If I am wrong please
advise me.

My birthday is in a few weeks time and my family want to buy me a book
on Linux.
Have you any suggestions?

I have never used Linux although I have used machines at work that used
Unix so I learned a bit about commands and options, although I still
translate them to DOS equivalents.

I will be replacing my 486 PC (Win 3.11) with a Pentium. This will have
to run some sort of Win OS because I will run a video capture card and
video editing software (probably Adobe Premiere). I will specify a
multiboot system, assuming the supplier is prepared to set it up for me.

Browsing in a bookshop I was surprised to read warnings about Winmodems
so you can tell that I am pretty ignorant. Using USB ports will be
uncharted waters for me.

I no longer do any programming so languages are not relevant but I will
need to find suitable Linux applications for basic things like WWW,
email, fax, wordprocessing, spreadsheets. I will also need to exchange
documents etc with friends who use Win applications, assuming that this
is technically possible. I have not seen a book with a chapter on this
subject.

Thanking you in anticipation
