I have setup a linux box running RedHat 6. As of few days ago I could not
login as root or any user when I attempted to login locally. Neither can I
login using telnet. But I can login the box using ftp (as a user) and can
use linuxconf through a web browser with the root password being recognized.

It is been recommended that I login locally as single user, which I can do,
and remove the root password. My question is why does linuxconf recognize
root and telnet not recognize root. Any help.

As I try to think about events that preceded this problem (the box worked
perfectly for many weeks), two things come to mind. One, there was a power
outage and the box shut down without a graceful exit. Two, I added a new
user using linuxconf through a web browser.

Thanks for any help.
