I forgot to answer one question i see;

> modprobe 3c59x <---the other 2 i know, but what does this do?

It will load the kernel module driver for a 3 com 305B ethernet card.

I wrote that because, ALL distributions supply ethernet (or come to that
nearly all drivers) as kernel modules.

man modprobe
man kerneld

There is also many documents over ethernet drivers and the cards they are
written for. /usr/doc/*

I suggest you read some doc's from /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/
to start with that will give you far more info than we can.
