Please don't tell us you did "etc" or that you checked "etc" (unless you
actually mean the directory named /etc, of course); tell us what you
actually did and/or checked. You undoubtedly made a mistake (otherwise you
wouldn't get the dependency errors and the connectivity failures), but you
don't tell us enough to help you find out what it is.
On the first problem (the kernel errors), tell us
what Linux distribution and version
what was the **old** kernel version
what is the **new** kernel version
did you move "modules.dep" as well as the modules themselves?
what were the actual errors (or a sample of them if there were
a whole bunch?
what was the actual sequence of commands you went through
to compile the kernel, then put things where they
need to go?
On the second problem -- do you mean that this host can ping successfully to
a *specific* other host, but that *same* host cannot successfully ping the
machine with the new kernel? If so, please tell us the following:
when you try to ping to the machine, what is the actual
output of the failed ping (ping fails in4 different
ways that I know of, and the differences are informative)?
when you try to telnet to it and fail, what is the actual
failure report on the other host? Also, does the
"problem" host show any log entries related to the
failed ateempt?
on the "problem" host, what is the actual output of "ifconfig -a"?
on the "problem" host, what is the actual output of "route -n"?
is there a firewall/router between the two hosts? If so, does it
either Masq the address of the "problem" host or do
any access blocking?
