Well ... your description of the kernel "make" sequence looks right ...
assuming you moved the modules and modules.dep by hand rather than doing a
"make modules_install" as your last step. But that was only one of a long
list of questions I asked in my first response.
So while this one answer doesn't suggest any solution to your problem,
perhaps answers to the rest of the set will.
BTW, you might find "make menuconfig" easier to use than "make config" --
assuming you have the needed support (the ncurses library, mainly) on your
system. Read over /usr/src/linux/README (probable location) for mor info on
this and the modules_install option.
