OK. Right. You also mentioned, in another private message, that you are
using RH 6.2. And you said before that kppp dials, the ISP answers and you
get carrier, but the actual PPP connection doesn't complete.
You need to find out what is actually going back and forth between you and
your ISP. You have (at least) three options, all of which have already been
outlined:
1. Boot up the machine and do an unsuccessful kppp login attempt. Then grep
for message from kppp and pppd in your logs. Do this with the commands
grep kpp /var/log/*
grep pppd /var/log/*
and see what you get. Assuming it is a moderate amount of stuff, post it to
the list and let one of us try to help you interpret it. DON'T REBOOT before
checking the logs; on some systems, reboots delete alot of log info.
2. Do a manual login with cu and post its log. I don't use this program
myself, but Lawson's instructions looked pretty clear to me.
3. Do a manual connection with minicom and see what the prompts that come
from the ISP look like. I've outlined how to do this, including how to
correct the lockfile problem you experienced, in prior messages.
A fourth option, not previously suggested is:
4. Call tech support at the ISP, tell them you are having problems, and ask
for advice. If they support person is unhelpful ... well, welcome to Linux;
we get a lot of that from clueless ISPs. At least ask what authentication
method they use (the ONLY correct answers are PAP, CHAP, and Unix-style
userid/password), tell us what they say, and we'll try to help you from there.
I've said "us" here and there because I've added the linux-newbie back in
via a Cc. You want to keep this discussion on the list, to improve your
chances of getting helpful answers and to let Lawson, Richard, I, and others
act as a sort of QC pool for one another's answers.
