Jill, two thoughts for you:

1) Are you using the correct login type for your ISP? I am not a command line guru,
or even a Linux expert, like Lawson and Ray, but I use KDE, as well. I could not
connect to my ISP after I changed my login type to PLIP. When I changed it back to
PPP, it worked fine. Also, does your ISP require a login script? You may need to go
back to Windows and look at your Dial-Up Networking setup to verify.

2) I can't remember the final outcome of your modem difficulties, but it seems to me
the problem could be your modem. Is it Plug-n-Pray? Linux didn't even acknowledge
the existence of my modem, until I jumpered it to use Com2, IRQ3, and disabled my
motherboards built-in Com2. Once I did that, I was able to setup my connection, from
recognizing the modem to "Connected" in a couple of minutes.

I am at work, and am running NT here (Yuck!), but I'll catch up w/ you from my Linux
box at home. It sounds like we are coming from the same background, i.e., sick of
Windows, but definitely GUI people, and gone to Linux not necessarily to be a "power
user" (I hate that term!), but just wanted something that is stable and doesn't assume
you are an idiot. I have been running MacMillan Complete Linux 6.5 (based on Mandrake
6.5, which is, I believe, based on Red Hat 6.1) for about a week and a half, and have
been able to do 90% of everything I want. Good luck!
