Hello all:
I am afraid I may have broken something related to my email.
I had mutt working fairly well. I could download email from
one server with mutt's POP3 capabilities, with messages delivered to
~/Mail/inbox.
I then got fetchmail working well, this time downloading email from
two different servers, with mutt finding it in
/var/spool/mail/$USER all without a hitch.
Next I tried to get procmail to work, and I know that it shouldn't
have been difficult, but somehow I must've messed something up.
I cannot even send mail to $USER@localhost any longer. Maybe it was
when I changed the mode (permissions) on some directory or file,
or something like that?
I've been racking my brain to remember what it was I could've done
to mess it up. I'd appreciate any ideas anyone might have.
I usually keep a log of all commands I execute as root, but I didn't
this time.
Some of the things I did (as root) were:
create a ~/.procmailrc file
create a ~/Procmail directory
create a ~/Procmail/testing.rc
chmod 511 /etc/smrsh (according to sendmail's smrsh.README--
which actually referred to /usr/etc/smrsh)
verify that the lines in sendmail.rc regarding procmail reflected
the correct location for the executable
created directories /usr/adm and /usr/adm/sm.bin
(in /usr/adm/sm.bin) ln -s /usr/bin/procmail procmail
created a ~/.forward file, which I probably never needed
Never did I get a log file in ~/Procmail/
I then (not necessarily in order--but to the best of my recollection)
deleted /usr/adm and directories within
renamed the ~/.forward file to essentially 'remove it' from the equation
renamed the ~/.procmailrc file for the same reason
I'm primarily interested in knowing where I might look next.
I'm not very knowledgeble about log files, but remember a recent posting
stating I can alter my /etc/syslog.conf if I'm not getting enough info.
I also assume I'll need various basics in place to get this working again.
With kmail using SMTP instead of sendmail, I can do everything just fine.
But I miss mutt!
