You're too stingy with information.
1. What motherboard? A lot of the ones I've tried recently (SuperMicro SEA
370, Tyan Tomcat, ASUS MEW) have some difficulty achieving good resolution
with older X servers.
2. What version of X11? The current version is 4.0, available from
http://www.xfree86.org/ .
3. What X server did you try? (I guess SVGA from the message you quote.) The
list at http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist has about 6 SiS entries, all using SVGA.
4. I haven't tried it myself, but a colleague solved some onboard video
problems with patches "from Intel". I don't have a working URL for this
information, but you might want to scout around the Intel Web site.
