Be carefull with Ted Ray, before we know it he will know all out secrets.
For your info Ray, i dont know if Ted told you but he has slackware.
Slackware seems to have different permissions for its 'lp's.
However Ted's do seem strange, they should be;
ls -al /usr/bin/lp*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Feb 15 11:48 /usr/bin/lpc -> /usr/sbin/lpc*
-r-s--s--x 1 root lp 14632 Sep 15 1999 /usr/bin/lpq*
-r-s--s--x 1 root lp 15256 Sep 15 1999 /usr/bin/lpr*
-r-s--s--x 1 root lp 15288 Sep 15 1999 /usr/bin/lprm*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 2507 Jun 28 1999 /usr/bin/lpunlock*
ls -al /dev/lp*
crw-rw---- 1 root daemon 6, 0 Apr 27 1995 /dev/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root daemon 6, 1 Apr 27 1995 /dev/lp1
crw-rw---- 1 root daemon 6, 2 Apr 27 1995 /dev/lp2
Now Redhat on the otherhand as.
-r-sr-sr-x 1 root lp 16872 Feb 14 19:13 /redhat-6.2/usr/bin/lpq*
-r-sr-sr-x 1 root lp 18568 Feb 14 19:13 /redhat-6.2/usr/bin/lpr*
-r-sr-sr-x 1 root lp 17208 Feb 14 19:13 /redhat-6.2/usr/bin/lprm*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3148 Feb 14 19:13 /redhat-6.2/usr/bin/lptest*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2507 Feb 8 05:19 /redhat-6.2/usr/bin/lpunlock*
ls -al /dev/lp*
Returns the same.
It seems to me that Ted has changed permissions of the files himself and
ossably has forgotten about it.
BTW, Ray i know Ted quite well, i have access to his system, but i did not
know anything about this problem.
As a matter of fact there is something wrong with mail from vger at the
minute, i am getting next to nothing and what does arrive are replys to
mails i have not even received yet.
I also hope that i am not poking my nose in where it is possably not wanted.

Those are the same as i have here on my slackware system.
