Maybe, but any other internet software I use seems to find a dns OK and
once
running netscape run OK too. I've never had this problem with netscape
under
windows and I would have thought that they would behave in a similar
fashion
in that case as the set up is almost the same (part of a LAN that uses
another
computer to gain access to the internet). Though linux Netscape doesn't
seem
as good as the windows version to me, so maybe they behave differently.

Unlikely.

Lets say that it is one of the above. Then if anyone using netscape was
to
start it up without being connected to the internet then they should get
similar symptoms to what I get.
Anyone notice that before?
No point me trying it as I've already got the symptoms :-)

It does, but the network seems OK to me and all my other internet
software.
I've changed Nescafe to start up with Messenger, but the long delay is
still
there.

I didn't because I wanted to know if it was a common problem.

Faster CPU, same RAM and more swap.
But I think there is a util here to monitor RAM/SWAP usage, so I'll have
that
running and see what happens. This could explain the symptom below
maybe???

I'll do another search of the logs. Never know.

A few things in there for me to think about Richard.

A bit more info. A little while ago I shut down and start netscape
again.
This time the Netscape window came up ( the page was blank though) and
when
I clicked on Communicator it froze up again. KDE also appeared to be
frozen
as none of the buttons on the panel worked and none of the panel icons
changed
on mouse over. Caps lock worked OK and I'd assume linux kernel was still
happy.
Could a dns problem with netscape cause KDE to grind to a halt?
When the problem is with Nescape taking a long time to appear in the
first place
then KDE and anything else running seem to work as per normal.

Shane..
