You don't mention which Distro you are using, and I am only familiar with
RedHat, so...

RedHat's scripts (/etc/X11/Xclients) are trying to figure out which window
manager (Desktop) to start. I suggest you take a look at it for details.

1) Looks in the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop
2) If "GNOME" is found, set that to prefered
3) If "KDE" is found set that to prefered.
4) If "AnotherLevel" is found, set that to prefered.
5) If 'prefered gnome', then start it, if not installed try start kde.
6) If 'prefered AnotherLevel', then...
6a) If $HOME/.wm_style contains Afterstep or AfterStep, start that
6b) If $HOME/.wm_style contains WindowMaker or Windowmaker or WMaker or
wmaker, start that.
6c) If $HOME/.wm_style contains Fvwm95 or fvwm95 start that
6d) If $HOME/.wm_style contains Mwm or MWM or Lesstif start that.
7) If all that fails, give a try of fvwm and last twm...

So, in your case (if your are using RedHat), create a script, that
a) If gnome is wanted, echo "GNOME" >/etc/sysconfig/desktop
b) If kde is wanted, echo "KDE" >/etc/sysconfig/desktop
c) If wmaker is wanted, rm /etc/sysconfig/desktop ; echo
"WindowMaker" >$HOME/.wm_style
d) startx

Hope this helps.
