Normally speaking one can use;
ctrl-alt-F1 F2 F3 etc, to return to console mode, from there one can kill
the X processes.

One can also try under X the combination of;
ctrl-alt-backspace
to try and kill X from within X "safely".

Are you sure the "machine" freezes up. or is it just X which freezes.?
You could try pinging the machine when you see that X has frozen from
another machine on your network, if you can ping the machine the chances
are large that you can login and kill the bad program before killing X.!

There again, if you can login via a remote machine, you should be able to
return to a text console with the first option stated above.
