Exiting X

Having just upgraded to RH 6.2, I now get a Gnome X login prompt. How do I
get back to the command line? Ctr-alt-bksp simply returns me to an X login
prompt.
X loads in 8bpp by default and I would like to restart x in 16bpp with
startx -- -bpp 16.
