You can change the boot mode in linuxconf which is 
on a redhat menu in Gnome (i think)

The entry you are looking for is in Config/Boot Mode/Mode/default boot
mode

You need to swap from "Graphic & Network" to "Text mode & Network"

After activating changes and rebooting it will offer you the command
line.

If you want to put the default back after you have configured X then
do "init 5" at the command prompt and do the reverse to set it back.
