I think you should use ipmasq it is easier to set up and also to save
yourself some trouble get pmfirewall from http://www.pointman.org just get
the tar gzipped package unpack it and run its script it will ask you a
series of questions on what you want to allow and deny basically make sure
you have two network cards one for the outside world and one for the
inside. Or if you use a modem internal interface should be your card and
external interface ppp0. You could also read the ipchains howtos on the
net.

As for printer sharing samba is not the only option but I think it is the
easiest option but if you want to configure lpd then read TCP/IP network
administration from O'Reilly and Associates.

The home directory does not have to be world readable infact it should
not! But the public_html directory should be world readable.
