Hi,

It doesn't say it needs the firmware it says it can't find the NIC.

I've seen both messages.

If R410 has Broadcom NICs, then they're supported; it's firmware
is considered non-free according to Debian policy and as such they
aren't available in generic iso's:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch02s02.html.en

Prepare pendrive with
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/lenny
and use it during installation ( on "i can't detect your network 
hardware, if you have firmware on removable media, i can try it"
screen ).
